Guatemalan Fortune Owls

Rudy Giron: &emdash; Guatemalan Fortune Owls

Did you know that the number 13 is sacred and a good luck number for the Maya? The same principal applies to owls and that’s why they manifest constantly in the handicrafts and arts of Guatemala. Follow the rabbit to the archives for Tecolote and you will see the many different versions found just around Antigua Guatemala.

Tecolotes (owls) represent Luck, Prosperity and Abundance in Guatemala. Also, did you know that in Guatemala people get ceramic owl banks instead of piggy banks; although one can also find piggy banks.

Is the number 13 really lucky for the maya ? It has always been my lucky number, too. Yet another reason I can’t stay away from Guatelinda, I think….

    • Yes Eric, 13 is very sacred number, a lucky number. The end of the long count Mayan calendar that just end on December 21, 2012 was the Thirteen Baktun (13 x 20). So there you have it, another reason to have Guatemala as your full-time residence, don’t you agree?

The owl is an old Maya symbol, there is a cave in Yucatan with an owl painted on the wall that is over 2000 years old. Loltun south of Ticul is the location. The church on the square in Ticul has the owl motif on its front, the church was built in the 16th century.

    • Thanks Norm for sharing and augmenting the information about the tecolotes.
