The Antigua Guatemala Brand Launching Event

The Antigua Guatemala Brand Launching Event by Rudy Girón

In my humble opinion, I believe that La Antigua Guatemala is among the best places in the world to live, don’t you agree? I mean you get some of the benefits of living in a big city while retaining the colorful and peaceful aspect of a little town embedded in the highland of Guatemala.

The people and organization involved in the creation of the Antigua Guatemala Brand want to take advantage of some of the unique and enchanting features of La Antigua Guatemala to easily promote and market the colonial city under one brand; similar to a product. The Antigua Guatemala Brand is, in other words, a touristic marketing and promotional tool. It will be interesting to see how effective Antigua Guatemala Brand becomes as well as to see the different manifestations of it in the promotional campaigns.

I will not bore you with all the glory details of the event. Suffices to say, that there were speeches, folkloric dances and marimba music. The event lasted a little over four hours. I am taking advantage of newly acquired skill to compress most of it under one minute through the use of a time-lapse video made from 525 photos taken through the night. Enjoy!

Also, below you can watch the 15-minute photographic presentation with nearly 250 photos from AntiguaDailyPhoto.com projected over a giant screen hanging next to Palacio de los Capitanes as part of the event. I am sure many of you will remember some of the photos here.

Last but not least, here’s a sample of the Antigua Guatemala brand so you can see the proposed logo and color palette.

What do you think?

@Scott, what are you agreeing to… be careful or I will hold it against you next time you’re in town. 🙂

LAG is an easy sell…so much to love. The logo , though, I find the printing difficult to understand at first glance. A bit confusing

@sjbj, the logotype is based on a modified version of the Trajan Pro typography, one of my favorites for its classic and elegant looks. They flipped N horizontally and removed the bar on the A to make look like the colonial-times writing on the signs. I promise I will look for one of those signs so you can see the writing style. In the mean time look at this sign to get you started:

The color palette for the logo is great the ocre is so common to the local architecture and the purple of Semana Santa is what the city is famous for. The font is modern and creative interpretation of Retro-Antiquity…I like it a lot. The photo presentation was great and had many old favourites!

Rudy, you are still a young man and may yet be the Mayor of Antigua (and if not, then maybe Caballero or Hidalgo). You have been the best Ambassador Antigua could wish for; always putting the best face of our favourite city forward; able to depict reality without being disloyal to her shortcomings and always exhibiting the beauty of LAG with love, friendly dialogue and photographic excellence! Long live the brand of La Antigua Guatemala and your participation in it!

@ElCanche, thanks so much for the awesome feedback. I don’t know if the Mayorship is for me though, although my friends tell me I have the most mayorships from LAG in Foursquare; does that count? 🙂

The current situation with the ATM machines ripping people off left, right, and center is doing more to hurt the image of LAG than anybody else is doing to improve it these days. If visitors cannot trust the access they have to their money, then they won’t come, and I cannot blame them. Semana Santa is going to be a goldmine for the thieves. If the banks don’t do something soon to secure those ATM machines, the reputation of LAG will surely suffer more than it already has done.

@Anne, what are you talking about, I have not heard anything yet. I have had some troubles with one ATM machine not giving the money, but I just went to the bank to report it and the money was credited to my account afterwards. Could you please expand on your complaint about the ATM machines in LAG and provide us with the background information. Thanks!

@Sompopo, thanks. Can you believe it’s been almost five years already? How are things with you and the family?
