Foodie Fridays — Venezuelan Arepas from La Gorda

As I mentioned last Friday, we now have Colombian arepas and Venezuelan arepas in Antigua Guatemala within a block from each other.

The arepa shown here is from La Gorda, located in 7a avenida norte, after 1a calle but before reaching Fernando’s Kaffee. You can have arepas with all kinds fillings from chicken to beef, from pork to cheese; there’s no limit in what you can put inside.

Stay tuned for next Foodie Friday’s Argentine empanadas from…

What’s an arepa, I hear you asking? Read on.

Arepa is a type of food made of ground maize dough, originating from the northern region of South America in pre-Columbian times, and is notable in the cuisines of Colombia and Venezuela. It is eaten daily in those countries and can be served with accompaniments such as cheese, cuajada, various meats, chicken, avocado, and diablito. Source: Wikipedia

  1. Now that looks really tasty! I lived in Venezuela for 5 years and used to always have arepas on the table, but they were just the plain ones. We used to eat “hallacas” at Christmas, which are a bit like tamales, but with more stuff added in. Look forward to next week’s empanadas argentinas. Used to order those as a starter at my favorite steakhouse in Buenos Aires…looks like the only travel I get nowadays is through your culinary travelogue! You always do great food pictures, Rudy!
