The dome is gone, but the pillars adorned with giant mermaids remain of the lateral aisle of the San Francisco El Grande Church in the southeast of Antigua Guatemala. Come back tomorrow to see a close-up view of one of the giant mermaids carved in each corner of this structure.

The Franciscans were among the first religious orders to arrive to Guatemala, 1530. The construction of this church began in 1579, through the centuries this building has been partially destroyed by earthquakes. This latest reconstruction began in 1960.
